Grooved Feed Guidance, Core Functions & Benefits:
The longitudinal grooves milled directly into the bedplates work in conjunction with custom bottom cutterhead knives or grooving cutters. The initial cutter cuts matching grooves into the underside of the raw stock, registering it securely to the bed's grooves to keep short or cupped boards running straight without drifting off the fence.
Friction & Resin Relief:
Standard flat bedplates create significant surface drag when feeding wet, sap-rich, or resinous timber (like pine, fir, or green hardwood). The channels reduce overall contact area, lowering friction and preventing suction/sticking.
Debris & Pitch Clearance:
Sawdust, wood resin, and pitch buildup can cause uneven heights or feeding jams. Grooves act as evacuation paths, allowing fine dust and pitch to fall away from the main bearing surface.
Wax/Lubricant Distribution:
When paired with an automatic or manual bed lubrication system (such as table lubrication pumps), the grooves help distribute wax/oil evenly across the table rather than letting it wipe away on the first board.
Common Applications
Short Stock Processing:
Ideal for running short pieces (such as parquet components, drawer sides, or short moulding blanks) that would otherwise struggle to maintain parallel alignment against the side fence.
Cupped or Unseasoned Wood:
Prevents cupped or warped boards from rolling or twisting as they hit the vertical and horizontal cutter spindles.
High-Speed Feed Lines:
Reduces the strain on feed rollers and drive systems by lowering bed drag during continuous industrial runs.
